CAD Designer
Job Title: CAD Designer
Department: Project Team, EmTDLab Space Division SA
Location: Belval, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg
Duration: Part-time (60% to 70% occupancy), open ended contract
Reports to: Project Manager
THE POSITION
We are seeking a talented and dedicated CAD Designer to join our team in Luxembourg for a 24-month, part-time position (60% to 70% occupancy). In this role, you will play a crucial part in designing a metallic enclosure to protect satellite electronics, using novel radiation-shielding materials. Your expertise will ensure the enclosure meets stringent structural, thermal, and shielding requirements, contributing directly to the project’s success. This is a unique opportunity to apply your CAD design skills in a high-impact space project, gain experience in aerospace engineering, and enhance your visibility in the industry through collaboration with esteemed stakeholders and opportunities for recognition.
WHAT WE OFFER
Impactful Work: Be at the forefront of space technology innovation, contributing to a project that protects satellite electronics in real-world space conditions, directly impacting mission reliability and longevity. Your work on radiation testing will be critical to achieving project goals, paving the way for commercialization of SMART radiation shields.
Learning Opportunities: Gain hands-on experience with advanced radiation testing facilities and tools (e.g., GEANT4), and deepen your expertise in space radiation physics. Collaborate with industry leaders, expanding your knowledge through cross-functional teamwork and access to cutting-edge simulation technologies like Symade.ai and Geant4.
Visibility and Growth: Showcase your expertise through high-visibility deliverables (e.g., radiation test reports) and milestone reviews with stakeholders, enhancing your reputation in the space industry. Opportunities for publication and presentation at project closeout will elevate your professional profile.
Motivating Environment: Join a collaborative, innovative team at EmTDLab, where your contributions are valued in a no-nonsense, transparent culture. Enjoy flexible work arrangements, a stimulating work environment (open office, co-working spaces), and a competitive remuneration package including a yearly bonus, meal vouchers, and paid training.
Career Development: Benefit from EmTDLab’s commitment to cross-functional collaboration and personal growth, with opportunities to expand your role and develop new skills in a high-impact space project.
CORE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Enclosure Design: Lead the development of a 3D CAD model for a radiation-shielded satellite electronics enclosure using tools like Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks. Ensure the design meets structural (e.g., vibration resistance up to 20 g RMS), thermal (conductivity ≥15 W/m·K), and shielding requirements.
Structural and Thermal Analysis: Perform structural and thermal analysis of the enclosure design, ensuring compliance with project specifications (e.g., withstand 100 thermal cycles, -150°C to +150°C). Document findings in a detailed analysis report to support manufacturing readiness.
Iterative Design Optimization: Collaborate with materials scientists and computational experts to incorporate feedback from material optimization and simulation phases, refining the enclosure design to balance shielding performance, weight, and structural integrity.
Prototype Support: Provide technical support during the manufacturing phase by liaising with the manufacturing subcontractor to ensure the 3D CAD model aligns with production capabilities (e.g., L-PBF process). Review prototype specifications to confirm design fidelity.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with the Project Manager and testing teams to ensure the enclosure design supports radiation, mechanical, and thermal testing phases. Participate in design review meetings to validate progress and incorporate stakeholder feedback.
INDIRECT TASKS
Documentation Support: Contribute to monthly progress reports by providing updates on design progress, challenges, and solutions. Assist in preparing meeting minutes for milestone reviews (e.g., design readiness, project closeout).
Risk Management: Identify and document design-related risks (e.g., potential manufacturing defects), supporting the Project Manager in regular risk updates. Participate in risk reviews to monitor and mitigate risks.
Knowledge Sharing: Engage in knowledge transfer with materials scientists and testing teams to align the enclosure design with material properties and test outcomes. Share design insights during team meetings to support iterative improvements.
Coordination Support: Participate in local coordination meetings with subcontractors (e.g., for manufacturing and certification) to ensure design specifications are met throughout the project lifecycle.
Professional Development: Stay updated on CAD design trends and aerospace standards by attending training sessions and workshops (e.g., paid training opportunities offered by EmTDLab), contributing to your professional growth and project innovation.
QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related field, with a focus on CAD design or aerospace applications.
Experience: 3+ years of experience in CAD design, preferably in aerospace or mechanical engineering projects, with expertise in 3D modeling and structural analysis.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks), experience with structural and thermal analysis, and familiarity with aerospace design standards. Knowledge of additive manufacturing (e.g., L-PBF) is a plus.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication for stakeholder collaboration, and a proactive approach to risk management and quality assurance. Ability to manage time effectively in a part-time role.
Availability: Willingness to commit to a 60% to 70% occupancy schedule, with flexibility to attend key project meetings and reviews as needed.
