Radiation Physicist
Job Title: Radiation Physicist
Department: Project Team, EmTDLab Space Division SA
Location: Belval, Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg (with travel to testing facilities)
Duration: Full-time, open-ended contract
Reports to: Project Manager
THE POSITION
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Radiation Physicist to join our team in Luxembourg for a 24-month project. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in testing and validating novel radiation-shielding materials designed to protect satellite electronics, focusing on radiation testing for charged particles and neutrons. Your expertise will ensure the materials meet stringent performance requirements, bridging the gap between material discovery and practical implementation. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-impact project, gain hands-on experience with advanced testing facilities, and enhance your visibility in the space industry through collaboration with esteemed stakeholders and publication opportunities.
WHAT WE OFFER
Impactful Work: Be at the forefront of space technology innovation, contributing to a project that protects satellite electronics in real-world space conditions, directly impacting mission reliability and longevity. Your work on radiation testing will be critical to achieving project goals, paving the way for commercialization of SMART radiation shields.
Learning Opportunities: Gain hands-on experience with advanced radiation testing facilities and tools (e.g., GEANT4), and deepen your expertise in space radiation physics. Collaborate with industry leaders, expanding your knowledge through cross-functional teamwork and access to cutting-edge simulation technologies like Symade.ai and Geant4.
Visibility and Growth: Showcase your expertise through high-visibility deliverables (e.g., radiation test reports) and milestone reviews with stakeholders, enhancing your reputation in the space industry. Opportunities for publication and presentation at project closeout will elevate your professional profile.
Motivating Environment: Join a collaborative, innovative team at EmTDLab, where your contributions are valued in a no-nonsense, transparent culture. Enjoy flexible work arrangements, a stimulating work environment (open office, co-working spaces), and a competitive remuneration package including a yearly bonus, meal vouchers, and paid training.
Career Development: Benefit from EmTDLab’s commitment to cross-functional collaboration and personal growth, with opportunities to expand your role and develop new skills in a high-impact space project.
CORE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Radiation Testing Execution: Lead the planning, setup, and execution of radiation testing campaigns for charged particles (e.g., HZE, protons, electrons) and neutrons at a state-of-the-art testing facility in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Conduct tests to evaluate shielding effectiveness, ensuring dose reduction targets and mitigation of single-event effects.
Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze test data using tools like Python, SRIM/TRIM, and SIMNRA to assess material performance against project goals. Prepare a comprehensive radiation test report to support final project validation.
Testing Protocol Development: Design and refine testing protocols for charged particle and neutron irradiation, ensuring alignment with space standards and mission-specific radiation environments (e.g., LEO conditions). Collaborate with the radiation testing team to optimize test setups.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with the Project Manager, computational experts, and external testing facilities to coordinate testing campaigns, ensuring timely execution. Participate in readiness reviews to validate test setups.
Quality Assurance: Verify test results against project requirements, ensuring data integrity and compliance with space standards. Support quality assurance audits to confirm testing accuracy.
INDIRECT TASKS
Documentation Support: Contribute to monthly progress reports by providing updates on radiation testing progress, risks, and mitigation actions. Assist in preparing meeting minutes for milestone reviews (e.g., test readiness, project closeout).
Risk Management: Identify and document radiation testing risks (e.g., scheduling delays at testing facilities), supporting the Project Manager in regular risk updates. Participate in risk reviews to monitor and mitigate risks.
Knowledge Sharing: Engage in knowledge transfer with computational experts to align radiation test results with simulation data, enhancing neutron shielding capabilities. Share findings during team meetings to support iterative design improvements.
Travel and Coordination: Participate in visits to testing facilities to oversee test setup, monitor progress, and review results, ensuring alignment with project timelines. Support local coordination meetings (e.g., for certification) as needed.
Professional Development: Stay updated on radiation physics advancements by attending training sessions and workshops (e.g., paid training opportunities offered by EmTDLab), contributing to your professional growth and project innovation.
QUALIFICATION AND SKILLS
Education: PhD or master’s degree in physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on radiation physics or space applications.
Experience: 3+ years of experience in radiation testing, preferably in space or aerospace applications, with expertise in charged particles and neutron irradiation.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g., Python, SRIM/TRIM, SIMNRA), experience with radiation testing protocols, and familiarity with space radiation environments (e.g., GCR, SPE). Knowledge of Geant4 simulations is a plus.
Soft Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication for stakeholder collaboration, and a proactive approach to risk management and quality assurance.
Travel Requirements: Willingness to travel to testing facilities (e.g., Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) for testing campaigns.
